Stray animal care in Bali, Indonesia

FOUR PAWS and Program Dharma – saving dogs and cats

9.1.2020

FOUR PAWS is committed to ending the cruel and brutal dog and cat meat trade in Southeast Asia. We will do so by rescuing animals in need, collaborating with governments, supporting local stray animal care programs, closing dog and cat meat restaurants, and bringing awareness to the trade.

FOUR PAWS has teamed up with dedicated partners across the region to help protect companion animals. One of these partners is Bali Animal Welfare Association (BAWA). We’re working to roll out a ground-breaking initiative called Program Dharma, in the regency of Karangasem. This regency is home to some of Bali's most idyllic beaches, and unfortunately also to some of the worst cases of animal cruelty and suffering.

Program Dharma is an initiative which applies a 'One Health' principles, uniting and empowering local communities to improve the health and welfare of both people and animals alike, transforming Balinese communities into natural sanctuaries for dogs and cats. By empowering villages to improve animal welfare, Program Dharma aims to reduce animal cruelty, provide vital desexing and rabies vaccination services, ultimately reducing the risk of human rabies.

  • Open a new animal emergency care centre for round-the-clock care to some of the region’s most desperate dogs and cats
  • Provide free desexing and medical services to humanely reduce the number of animals on the street, those most at risk of falling victim to the dog meat trade
  • Vaccinate dogs against rabies and promote responsible pet ownership
  • Fight against the dog meat trade by encouraging local regulations against the trade and associated cruelty
