Calling all MPs #DontBetrayAnimals
Over the past month, the Government has continuously deprioritised animal welfare, increasingly reneging on promises that have been made to the British public.
Worryingly the UK Government is failing to follow through on multiple commitments and proposals set out in the May 2021 Action Plan for Animal Welfare (APAW).
After waiting decades to see improvements in animal welfare in the UK, we cannot let the Government betray us and millions of animals. Please help us make sure our concerns are heard and addressed.
What is at risk?
A major piece of legislation is at risk, meaning millions of animals could continue to be unnecessarily hurt or killed. The Animals Abroad Bill’. This was set to ban the import of hunting trophies and the sale and advertisement of cruel animal tourism experiences abroad such as elephant riding.
Since the1980s, hunters hailing from the UK have shipped 5,000 trophies of CITES-listed animals back home.
In spite of this shocking figure support for banning trophy hunting imports is growing. In 2019, the UK Government made its first official commitment to impose a ban, and as of February 2022, 86% of the British public support the ban.
But now shocking news has circulated that these plans may be dropped. Worse still, senior government ministers are now keen to also drop bans on the import and sale of fur and force-fed foie gras.
Despite British farmers being banned from farming fur and foie gras since 2000, we are still supporting these cruel and exploitative industries by importing these products. Despite 72% of the British public supporting a fur sale and import ban there has been opposition to the import of fur and its sale in the UK. In May last year a call for evidence resulted in over 30,000 responses, mostly in favour of introducing a ban. But the lack of progress made by the Government to publish a response almost a full year later speaks loud and clear to the lack of commitment to improving animal welfare.
