The year that has been for FOUR PAWS
Animal welfare successes across 2020
Whilst 2020 has been a testing one due to the emergence of COVID-19, it has allowed for the spotlight to be shone on our treatment of the planet and animals and how this can be directly linked to human health. It is this very correlation that led to the creation of #LiveKinder a campaign that not only called for an end to the commercial wildlife trade, but also highlighted that small actions such as supporting #meatfreemonday or being a responsible pet owner can all have a positive impact.
Through #LiveKinder 156,000 of you supported our calls as part of the coalition to end the global wildlife trade, which saw handing these in to Downing Street in November. Furthermore, the topic was discussed at the G20 summit and we now await the future plans from our Government to prevent any future pandemics emerging.
Whilst so many of us experienced what it meant to be contained and locked down, for some animals 2020 represented the first time in their lives where they were free of the cages. During the year over 20 bears were rescued, including seven in one recent rescue. All of which are now living in species appropriate sanctuaries and learning what freedom feels like.
We hope that our campaigning to end the fur trade and continuing pressure on House of Fraser to reinstate their fur ban will carry on into 2021. We also hope that as part of our work calling for a #BetterDealForAnimals that as we leave the EU, our animal welfare laws will be protected, and the UK can uphold its status as having some of the highest animal welfare legislation worldwide.
None of these successes could have happened without your support. Without you we wouldn’t be able to hold Government to account, rescue animals or raise awareness of such important animal welfare issue. Please join us in 2021 as we continue to use our voices for animals around the world and find out more about all our current campaigns below.
