WORLD EGG DAY: A CRACKING REASON TO END THE CAGE AGE
Are we any closer to finally seeing an end to the cage age?
Many of you helped show the overwhelming support for an end to the cage age by signing an EU petition last year. But as more EU countries make strides to ban the caged rearing of farmed animals, what is the UK doing and are we at risk of losing our claim of having the highest animal welfare standards?
Every year across the UK millions of farmed animals, including chickens are kept in cages. At FOUR PAWS we are calling for an end to the use of
- Enriched cages for laying hens
- Farrowing crates for pigs by 2027
Whether in biscuits, pasta or mayonnaise – many processed foods contain eggs. Often these eggs come from laying hens kept in cages. Although the majority of consumers are opposed to battery farming and almost all retailers have removed fresh cage eggs from their shelves, consumers are unknowingly still eating eggs produced in cages. Sadly labelling for processed food is still lacking. Consumers therefore cannot check the farming conditions they support when buying certain products.
We cannot continue to keep ignoring the needs for improvements for farmed animals if we truly want to live kinder. The human race has seen many great ages, the cage age isn’t one of them.
If you want to show your support to #EndTheCageAge sign this government petition today.
