The Importance of Animal Welfare

Find out how this is an essential part of our vision

The importance of animal welfare may be something that you are considering or have been recently exploring. Wherever you are with this, the fact remains the same that offering your support to animal welfare can help to change the lives of animals on an individual or societal level.

In short, animal welfare is an essential part of tipping the balance away from a world that causes suffering to animals and towards one that offers them love, respect, and empathy instead. It’s the difference between human exploitation and animals living as they should.

FOUR PAWS and animal welfare

The importance of animal welfare in creating a world full of less suffering would be futile if there were not organisations out there ensuring it is taken seriously. As an international animal welfare organisation, we operate on a non-governmental level, which means we promote the importance of animal welfare at a not-for profit level independently from the Government.

This means that we do not rely on Government funding, so support like yours is essential to ensuring our work is able to be carried out. In short, this is why engaging with the importance of animal welfare helps organisations like ours.

When you support animal welfare, what are you supporting?

A donation to animal welfare can be used in a wide range of ways, which means that your contribution will go much further than just a simple click of a button. Whether you’re looking to donate to a specific event, like our recent rescue of Kaavan, or you’re looking to donate to animal welfare more generally to help our ongoing missions, your donation will be used to help animals have better lives across the globe.

Animal welfare is multi-tiered, including after-rescue animal care. Our sanctuaries serve as a second chance for our rescued animals, allowing them to live where they enjoy peace, care, and a species-appropriate environment that attends to their needs. This is the beauty of supporting animal welfare, you help to create a legacy both for yourself and for the animal that you help to rescue and support.

Our sanctuaries

Below, you will find a list of some of the sanctuaries that we have in operation across the world. These sanctuaries couldn’t exist without those supporting animal welfare. Read below for more information:

BEAR SANCTUARY Mueritz: The biggest bear sanctuary in Western Europe

Under the management of FOUR PAWS since 2006, BEAR SANCTUARY Mueritz houses 15 brown bears in its care. These bears were rescued from captivity. Now, they are able to enjoy a species appropriate forest environment on the 16-hectare site which caters to their needs and offers them a new, brighter life.

BEAR SANCTUARY Arbesbach: An animal-friendly home for abused bears since 1998

BEAR SANCTUARY Arbesbach offers a near-natural territory for bears that were former circus bears, or owned privately and kept in unsuitable conditions. This sanctuary offers 14,000 square metres of haven for the bears, allowing them to be free from the suffering they have endured. Currently, Arbesbach houses 6 bears that benefit greatly from all animal charity donations.

Big Cat Sanctuary LIONSROCK: Species appropriate home for more than 100 animals, mainly big cats in South Africa

LIONSROCK, previously a park, was taken over by FOUR PAWS in 2006. Named after a prominent rock in the centre of the area called “Lionsrock”, the sanctuary currently offers a home to more than 100 animals. These animals are mainly big cats rescued from zoos, private captivity or the entertainment industry. They can now live new lives thanks to animal welfare supporters.

Big Cat Centre FELIDA: Our FOUR PAWS rescue centre for big cats in the Netherlands

Our FELIDA sanctuary provides a caring home to big cats, such as tigers and lions (Currently 1 tiger and 5 lions). Although these rescue animals come from a range of different backgrounds, including circuses, private keeping and war-torn zoos, they all share a difficult start in life. In FELIDA, thanks to animal welfare supporters, they receive the specialised care to help them live much deserved happy lives.

These are just a few of the sanctuaries that we are able to sustain thanks to those who choose to donate to invest in the importance of animal welfare. You can find out more about our other sanctuaries here, as the list above is not exhaustive.
